Soils store a vast amount of carbon and can potentially offset or exacerbate the climate change triggered by anthropogenic carbon emissions. Knowing what controls the rates and magnitudes of soil carbon responses across ecosystems is crucial for accurately simulating climate-carbon feedbacks. We evaluate biotic and abiotic drivers of soil carbon dynamics and implement them in process-based models of carbon cycle.
