Standing snags and downed logs are an important component of forest ecosystems. They store carbon for decades thus preventing its return to the atmosphere and maintain biodiversity by providing habitat for birds and invertebrates. We study the controls of deadwood decay in various forest ecosystems and incorporate them into process-based mathematical model of carbon dynamics.
